It was attended by a delegation from China, the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the UK His Excellency Mr Li Changchun and the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary China Group. Also in attendance were children from a number of local primary schools who had been visited by the Confucius Institute. Several of the children performed Chinese songs, poetry and martial arts.

The 4-foot fruit cake was made by ten National Bakery School students and was decorated with choirboys, snowmen and Christmas trees along with Australian badges, flags, symbols and birds related to the State of Victoria. The ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and was attended by the Mayor of Chelsea, Councillor Charles Williams and the Governor of the hospital. The cake was ceremoniously cut with a traditional sword by a Chelsea Pensioner who had served with both the United Kingdom and Australian forces.

The exhibition celebrated the centenary of Roger Fry's Borough murals, which were commissioned in 1911 to decorate the Borough Polytechnic Institute's student dining room and were sold to the Tate Gallery in 1931. The exhibition was held in the Keyworth Centre Atrium and was organised by a group of University students with support from the University Archives Centre.
