Faraday Wing
Building · 1960-present

The National College Wing, or Faraday Wing as it is now called, was built on a site originally covered by 33 tall narrow houses, a railway signal factory and at least two other workshop blocks. The building was designed by Norman & Dawbarn Architects an opened in 1960 to house the National College for Heating, Ventilating, Refrigeration and Fan Engineering. It was officially opened on 20th November 1961 by the Minister of Education, Sir David Eccles. The College had for many years been linked to the Borough Polytechnic and in 1970 merged with it to form the Polytechnic of the South Bank. The building included specialist laboratories, lecture theatre and a specialist library maintained until the 1980s. In 1991 the building was refurbished and renamed the Faraday Wing in honour of Michael Faraday who was born in Newington Butts.

Surrey Lodge
Building

Surrey Lodge was a Halls of Residence at 1 Morton Place leased from Lambeth Council and opened in 1983. It is no longer used by the University.

Clarence Centre
Building · 1997-present

The buildings at 113-119 Borough Road and 123-132 London Road were commonly known as the Terraces and were built c.1820. The University purchased the buildings along with the former Duke of Clarence pub at 132 London Road in 1997. These buildings were given Grade II listed status in 2000. In 2011 work began on redeveloping the Terraces and pub, with work being done by the Rivington Street Studio (Hawkins/Brown). The buildings reopened as the Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation in Autumn 2013. Awards for the building include: Winner of the RICS 2015 Award for Regeneration, Civic Trust Commendation 2014, New London Awards 2014 Commendation, Highly Commended for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2014, Shortlisted for the RIBA Awards 2014.

The Centre provides office space to small business alongside retail space, event and exhibition space and meeting rooms. The Centre is also home to the University's Enterprise team.

Centenary celebrations

South Bank Polytechnic celebrated its centenary with a year's worth of celebrations, beginning with the Director, Pauline Perry releasing balloons from the Tower Restaurant. Other events included a service of thanksgiving, a special lunch at the Guildhall in London and dinner dance in Edric Hall.
The Centenary Lunch was held at the Guildhall, London and was hosted by the Vice Chancellor, Pauline Perry and the Liverymen of the Worshipful Company of Bakers. A recipe book, "The Lightest Chocolate Mousse in the World" was put together by the National Bakery School as part of the celebrations.

Lord Sheppard was made an Honorary Doctor of Laws in October 1994.

Miles Peter Richmond attended art classes at the Borough Polytechnic Institute following the Second World War and was taught by David Bomberg. He was a founder member of the Borough Group of artists. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the University in 2000.

Nitin Sawhney was made an Honorary Fellow of the University in 2006.

Nitin Sawhney CBE is a British musician, producer and composer, as well as former comic actor. A recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award in 2017, among several other awards throughout his career, Sawhney's work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of jazz and electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics, and spirituality. Sawhney is also active in the promotion of arts and cultural matters, and is a patron of numerous film festivals, venues, and educational institutions.

In November 2010 students at London South Bank University participated in the nationwide protest against planned spending cuts to further education and an increase of the cap on tuition fees. The LSBU students protested outside Technopark and also joined the national demonstration in Central London.

International Confectioners' Exhibition

The International Confectioners Exhibition, Dusseldorf 4-12 May 1957 was one of the largest exhibitions of its kind and featured displays of traditional confectionary products from countries in Europe. The Borough Polytechnic and the Leeds College of Technology were invited to display their produce as part of a section for Bakery Schools. The Polytechnic's Bakery and Confectionary Department was displayed by a member of staff, Miss Joan Russell who was then internationally well known for display work.
