Oldchurch Hospital located in Romford, in the London Borough of Havering formed part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust. The hospital incorporated the buildings of the former Romford Union Workhouse, built in 1838. The hospital closed in December 2006 with functions moved to the new Queen's Hospital and to King George Hospital, Chadwell Heath.

Gary Younge was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters of the University in 2007.

Gary Younge is a highly-respected black British author and journalist who's captivated audiences both here and in the US. He was New York correspondent and subsuquently Editor-at-large for The Guardian newspaper and a regular columnist for the respected weekly US magazine, The Nation. Gary has taught Eritrean refugees in Sudan, has studied French and Russian and has a postgraduate diploma in Newspaper Journalism. He has been newspaper journalist of the year in the Ethnic Minority Media Awards for three years running.

David Breyer Singmaster (b.1939) was a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at London South Bank University. A self-described metagrobologist, Singmaster became famous for his solution to the Rubik's cube, known as the "Singmaster notation" and his large personal collection of mechanical puzzles and books of brainteasers.

The Corporate Planning and Management Committee was was established by the Polytechnic's Director Baronness Pauline Perry in 1988 to bring together the resource and academic planning systems as a sub-committee of the Academic Board, alongside an Academic Standards Committee driving the quality assurance side. The Committee considered the University's short and long term strategies, corporate plan, faculty plans, plans for student numbers and the impact of these plans on resources.
