The first Excellence in Education Awards were held in 2013. The awards were introduced to celebrate teaching and support staff who had made a positive impact on students' learning experiences. 245 individuals were nominated by students across seven categories. The seven categories for nomination were: Outstanding Lecturer; Personal Tutor; Supervisor of the Year; Best Academic Feedback; Outstanding Student Support; Exceptional Support beyond Teaching; Outstanding Course Rep. The awards ceremony was held in Edric Hall on Tuesday 23 April at 5pm.

The Board of Governors was constituted by the Minister of Education to 'establish a Foundation with the principal object of maintaining a College for providing technical education and research in connection with heating, ventilating, refrigeration and fan engineering' (Declaration of Trust, NC/1/4). The original Board of Governors, appointed by the Minister of Education, had representation from the three industries, the Governors of the Borough Polytechnic and other interests as follows:

Four nominated by the Association of Heating, Ventilating and Domestic Engineering Employers;

Two by the British Refrigeration Association;

Two by the Institute of Refrigeration;

Four by the Fan Manufacturers' Association, Ltd.;

One by the National Union of Operative Heating and Domestic Engineers and General Metalworkers;

Two by the Trades Union Congress;

Four by the Governing Body of the Borough Polytechnic;

Two by London County Council as Local Education Authority;

One by the University of London; and

One by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The first chairman of the Governors was Hubert A. Secretan, future Chair of the Governors of the Borough Polytechnic. He was replaced in 1962 by John W. Cooling, one of the founding governors, who remained chairman until 1970.

The Board of Governors, in co-operation with the Governing Body of the Borough Polytechnic, were responsible of the development of the work of the College, including the selection and admission of students, maintenance of buildings and equipment, organisation, staffing and general administration. It had the right to appoint committees and at its first meeting of 20 January 1948 it appointed two committees: the Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Education Committee.

The last meeting of the Board was held on 3 July 1970.

The Finance and General Purposes Committee was set up at the first Board of Governors' meeting on 20 January 1948 to look after the general management and financial control of the College. It consisted of six ordinary members with the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Governing Body both as ex-officio members. Geoffrey Woods was elected as Chairman at the Committee's first meeting of 13 February 1948. The last meeting was held on 11 July 1969.

The Education Committee was setup at the first Board of Governors' meeting on 20 January 1948 to look after matters relating to the staffing and curriculum of the College. It was also responsible for establishing and developing research. It worked in close relationship with the three participating industries and was advised by the Education Board of the Heating and Ventilating Industry (see NC/7), the Education Committee of the Institute of Refrigeration and the Education Committee of the Fan Manufacturers' Association.

It consisted of 12 ordinary members with the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Governing Body both as ex-officio members. John W. Cooling, future Chair of the Board of Governors, was elected as Chairman at the Committee's first meeting of 13 February 1948. The last meeting was held on 3 October 1969.

H R F Bulletin

H. R. F. Bulletin was produced by the National College and contained abstracts of articles concerning heating, refrigeration and fan engineering from trade journals.

Instelling · 1944-1962

The Education Board of the Heating and Ventilating Industry was set up by the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (I.H.V.E.) and the Heating and Ventilating and Domestic Engineers' National Joint Industrial Council (N.J.C.E.) in 1944 to act as an advisory body to the Industry on all educational matters. It advised on educational problems affecting the industry and assisted those engaged in the industry to obtain the best possible training. It played an important role in the establishment of the National College and its first chairman Douglas Ingall (also Principal of the Borough Polytechnic) became the first Director of the National College. The Board acted as an Advisory Committee to the National College since the establishment of the College in 1948.

The original Education Board consisted of four members appointed by the I.H.V.E. and four members appointed by the N.J.I.C. with up to three co-opted members. In 1962 this was increased to four co-opted members and four non-voting observers who were the Head of the National College, the Secretary of the I.H.V.E., the Secretary if N.J.I.C. and the Secretary of the Heating and Ventilating Advisory Committee of the City and Guilds of London Insitute.

A memorandum giving details of the history of the Board and its terms of reference was circulated before the 63rd meeting of the Board in June 1962, which concluded that the Board had completed aa the tasks assigned to it and that it was very unlikely that within the next few years any new major developments in technical education would necessitate action by the Board. It was agreed amongst members that the Board should cease to function.

Redwood College was formed in July 1993 by the merger of Roding and Romford Colleges of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare Studies. These Colleges were in turn formed by the amalgamation of several Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in Essex and London. Redwood College of Health Studies merged with South Bank University in 1994.

Records in this collection were created by several hospitals in Essex and London, which taught nursing but which no longer exist, with the exception of Whipps Cross Hospital.

Forest Hospital

The Forest Hospital for Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Chigwell, Abridge, High Beech, Chingford and Sewardstonebury opened in 1913 with 21 beds. The Lord Mayor of London had laid the foundation stone in 1912, and the costs of the building had been donated by a local family. The new Hospital replaced the Village Hospital and the Medical Provident House in Buckhurst Hill, which both closed.

The Hospital joined the NHS in 1948 as a general hospital with 44 beds. It came under the control of the Forest Group Hospital Management Committee, part of the North East Metropolitan Regional Health Board.

In 1974, following a reorganisation of the NHS, it came under the auspices of the Redbridge and Waltham Forest Area Health Authority, part of the North East Thames Regional Health Authority. It had 42 beds.

By 1977 it faced the threat of closure.

In 1982 it had 40 beds. After another NHS reorganisation, it became part of the Waltham Forest District Health Authority, who managed it ex-territorially as the Hospital lay physically within the area of the West Essex Health Authority.

By 1985 it had become a small, well-run General Practioner hospital with 35 beds, a Physiotherapy Department, and a busy X-ray Department. It had a Day Centre with 20 places which provided companionship to elderly patients and a few hours' relief for their carers. But, again, it was threatened with closure and this time it did not survive. It closed in 1986.

Thorpe Coombe Hospital

Thorpe Coombe Hospital is a psychiatric unit and former maternity hospital in Walthamstow, north-east London, and part of North East London NHS Mental Health Trust. The hospital was opened as a maternity hospital in 1934, making use of part of a mansion which had been owned by Octavius Wigram. It ceased maternity facilities in 1973 and was subsequently used as a nurses' home, then a treatment centre for Alzheimer's disease patients, and latterly an out-patients and inpatient service psychiatric hospital.

The Middlesex Hospital was a teaching hospital located in the Fitzrovia area of London. First opened in 1745 on Windmill Street, it was moved in 1757 to Mortimer Street where it remained until it was finally closed in 2005. Its staff and services were transferred to various sites within the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust. The Middlesex Hospital Medical School, with a history dating back to 1746, merged with the medical school of University College London in 1987.

Hackney Hospital started life in 1750 as an infirmary within the workhouse on Homerton High Street. By the 1860s the infirmary was entirely separate from the main workhouse building. This allowed the infirmary to expand to 606 beds with a nursing staff of 45. By the 1930s the Hackney Institution, as the infirmary had become known, was taken over by the London County Council. In 1948, the Hospital became part of the National Health Service and the local Hackney Group of hospitals. In 1987 a new hospital was opened in the area, the Homerton, and general services transferred there. Eventually, only psychiatric and geriatric services remained, but in 1995 these were also transferred to the Homerton and the Hackney Hospital closed.

The Maternity Center Association, now Childbirth Connection was founded in 1918 as a North American not-for-profit organization to improve the quality of maternity care through research, education, advocacy, and demonstration of maternity innovations. In 1939 the Association sponsored a major exhibition of sculptures of the childbirth process by Robert Latou Dickinson and Abram Belskie at the 1939-40 World's Fair.

Law 84 Limited was established as a wholly-owned subsidiary company of South Bank Polytechnic on 19 Oct 1988. It then changed its name to South Bank Poly-Enterprises Limited in February 1989. Due to the Polytechnic being granted university status in 1992, the company changed its name a second time to South Bank University Enterprises Limited in June 1992.

The principal role of South Bank University Enterprises Limited is to handle the University's enterprise activities. These originally formed four areas: consultancy, contract research, sale of materials and the letting of facilities. Since 2002 the company has been increasingly involved in intellectual property issues arising out of the University's growing research portfolio and the company's enterprise activities now form three areas: student enterprise; intellectual property and spin out; and revenue generation.

Being a subsidiary company profits are transferred under a deed of covenant to the University. The company is run by a Board of Directors and a Managing Director.

Companies House is the United Kingdom Registrar of Companies. All forms of companies are incorporated and registered with Companies House and are required to submit specific details required by the Companies Act 2006, which superceded the Companies Act 1985. All registered limited companies must file annual financial statements along with annual company returns.

South London Polytechnic Institutes Council was established following the City of London Parochial Charities Act, 1883. In the Act the government's Charity Commissioners were to distribute money to schemes which would improve the physical, social and moral condition of Londoners. Edric Bayley, a solicitor and member of the London School Board, wanted to use the money to establish a people's college in Elephant & Castle, which could help alleviate the extreme poverty he saw in that area as well as help strengthen British industry.

In 1887 Bayley established the South London Polytechnic Institutes Council, whose members included the Lord Mayor of London and the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII) as its President. In January 1888 the Council appealed to the Charity Commissioners for the money they needed. The Commissioners were impressed and pledged that they would match any funds raised by the public up to the sum of £150,000 in order to establish three technical colleges, or polytechnics, in South London.

A Committee of the Council had the task of raising the money needed from the public and also of deciding where the three polytechnics should be located. The Committee decided that one should be established at Elephant and Castle (now London South Bank University), another at New Cross (which is now Goldsmiths College) and lastly at Battersea (which eventually moved and became part of the University of Surrey). The public appeal for the money needed was launched at a widely publicised dinner held at Mansion House in June 1888. Within four years £78,000 had been raised through the public's generosity for the Elephant & Castle and Battersea Polytechnics, which was matched by the Charity Commissioners.
